Old project that became lost in my project folder. Decided to finish it off since it was already almost done.

My Key Park

Specifically named as such because all the brushes used to make this image are custom brushes made out of the shape of a key. I was experimenting with custom brushes and thought this would be a fun way to test the concept out as well as give me a challenge.

After viewing a video online of someone creating a batarang out of an old saw blade I decided to give it a try. However seeing as it was my first attempt at any form of metal work my first attempt... left something to be desired. It was meant to look like the batarangs from the Christian Bale Batman movies, however between correcting mistakes and attempting to even things out. It ended up being too small, wonky, and a totally different shape.

My second attempt went considerably better. It was the right shape, size, and was less wonky.

After that my brother and father recommended I make any more out of aluminium because its easier to work with. The two pictures below represent my efforts to create my own design with aluminium. I wanted a batarang that could fold but that could also snap open when flicked, like the batrangs in various other Batman incarnations. My design used something similar to what you would see on a folding knife; when the blade of the knife moves far enough a piece of metal snaps into place below it to lock the knife in place. Same idea here only there is a clip on both parts of the batarang. At first you couldn't really flick it and snap it in place because the pressure from the clips actually kept it closed, but after fiddling with it a while everything became loser and worked better. It wasn't perfect and the clip system looked ugly but I'm still happy with how it came out.

This is the last batarang I made; like the previous it is made of aluminium and was designed to fold and flick open. However unlike the previous design, this batrang employs a slightly more complex locking system.  In the middle circular part of the batarang there is 2 holes on one wing and 2 pins on the other. When both halves are slid into the proper position the pins fit into the holes and hold the batarang in place. There is also a spring in the middle; one end of the spring is attached to one of the wings, the other end is attached to a moving disk. When the batarang is closed the pins are not in their holes, instead they sit on top of one of the wings. In addition, the inner spring is pulled on slightly, meaning once the pins are lined up with the holes the spring will pull the two halves of the batarang together and lock everything in place.

The system is much better in function and appearance, however due to a misjudgement of thinking super glue could hold certain parts together it does not function as well as it could. Inside the middle there is a bolt going through the middle of the spring as well as a ring that goes around the outside of the spring. Both of these were in place to keep the pins on the correct path to fall into the holes. However the ring was glued in with super glue and eventually came off. Because of that the flicking action doesn't always work. But when it does work it looks bloody cool.

All four of these is the cumulative effort of about one month of work. Working on a new batarang each week.

This is a banner I created for someone's online soap business.  I was not able to upload the good quality .swf file to Blogger so I included a lower resolution gif instead as well as a static version of the banner. The .swf version looked much better, didn't move as fast, and was an active link that took you directly to the clients Etsy page.

A little mock up I did of a box to hold crayons to send along with a resume to Crayola. The box was less about design and more about showing my ability to lay out packaging properly. Setting up bleed as well as cut and fold lines.

School Project: Create a travel poster for a destination of your choosing. I used Adobe Illustrator to outline and recreate familiar Australian imagery to invoke the feeling of Australia. Not to much to say about this project other than that I like how it came out and that I feel keeping it simple was better than trying to cram a lot into one poster, like some of my classmates chose to do.

Low Quality Screen Cap From A Game Turned Into A High Quality One.

Before

After

Original screen cap came from a PC game called Treasure Adventure Game. I saw another artist had worked on the same sort of project, recreating screen caps from games like Doom and Metroid. At the time I was playing Treasure Adventure Game and wanted to see if I could create a higher quality version of a screen cap from it. This is the end result and I am quite pleased with it.

School project focused on designing a micro-sight for Black Berry. For my design I attempted to make the sight look like you were looking at a Black Berry. Beside the Black Berry logo is 2 speakers you would see on the phone, farther to the right you see a little green light that some of the phones have. Not 100% sure what the light is for, perhaps to show Internet connectivity. Bellow that I recreated the information bar you would commonly see on mobile phone these days. Battery level indicator, the time, new messages alert, and signal strength.
This was a simple school project. Go on a trip to the ROM (Royal Ontario Museum). Take pictures along your adventure, then turn those pictures into a comic page.

This is a poster I made for a friend to advertise a movie his school was showing.

Rough pages for a graphic novel I am working on. These were originally created for a final project in one of my college classes to showcase part of a larger story I had planned.
School project to create a letter in the style of an illuminated manuscript.  The writing on the bottom is Latin, Non audeat facere lacrimam Aut Succendam, which translates to, I do not dare to tear or kindle. Which is a reference to the monks who used to create illuminated manuscripts. A single page was so difficult to make that ruining one usually brought about a punishment, not to mention the knowledge all your's and several other people's hard work has just been wasted.

This is my attempt at creating a Vincent Valentine glove. He is a character from the Final Fantasy series. This was made using a roll of thin steel we had laying around the garage. It was shaped using a hammer and a torch. It's held together with rivets.

All of these are paintings I did for school. The top one was based off the works by Camilla d'errico. The second is a picture of River Song's sonic screwdriver only zoomed up. And the last is a zoomed in section of Vincent Van Gogh's "Still Life With Pears."

All of these are small paintings/ illustrations I do from time to time for the purposes of practice. Each one is the size of a playing card.
Art Fundamentals Logo Submission

At my college they had a contest to create a logo to represent one of the programs you could take there (Art Fundamentals). This was the logo design I submitted. Unfortunately it was not chosen.

This was originally the background for my portfolio website. However I decided something more professional was required in place of this. This image is now my Facebook banner.

These are paintings I did for my grandparents as Christmas presents. They have become rather difficult to purchase gifts for over the years and I thought something more personal that they could appreciate would do better than some trinket. I chose to paint snowmen because my grandmother loves them and I thought she would appreciate being in a painting with some. My grandfather is sitting on a pile of books because he loves to read and has quite the collection.
